European Election 1979 - 1989 (aggregierted district and party data)

The data set is an aggregated data set with the results of the European elections in 1979, 1984 and 1989 as well as the 1987 federal elections at the level of district free cities and districts in the Federal Republic of Germany. The election results for these elections are supplemented by socio-structural data and information on the larger political parties from various sources.
The data set consists of several files that can be linked together using different key variables, depending on the purpose of the analysis.

District data 1 (for each district and for each election): Number of eligible voters in the district at the respective election; number of votes cast in the district at the respective election; number of valid and invalid votes in the district at the respective election; participation in the district at the respective election.

Party data 1: Number of votes for one party in the circle in the current election; numerical code to identify the party according to International Almanac of Electoral History (Mackie-Rose Code) and Comparative Manifestos Project (CMP) party codes.

Identification variables: Statistical key number; federal state; administrative district; consecutive number Federal Statistical Office 1989a; name of the county or the county-free city; election date.

District data 2: Structural data for the individual urban municipalities and administrative districts: number of municipalities in the district on 31.12.1986; area in square kilometers on 31.12.1986; population on 31.03.1987 in 1000; foreigners on 31.03.1987 in 1000; percentage of foreigners on 31.03.1987; German population and male German population on 31.03.1987 in 1000; increase or decrease in German population compared to 30.09.1982; population density on 31.12.1986; in relation to the year 1986: German population under 15 years, aged 15 to 18 years, aged 18 to 25 years, aged 25 to 35 years, aged 35 to 60 years, and aged 60 or more; live births, deaths, inflows and removals per 1000 inhabitants; increase or decrease in German population in 1986; number of agricultural holdings per 1000 inhabitants in 1987; proportion of holdings with an agricultural and forestry holding area between 1 ha and 5 ha, between 5 ha and 20 ha, between 20 ha and 50 ha and over 50 ha; Mining/production enterprises per 1000 inhabitants 1987; mining/production workers per 1000 inhabitants 1987; share of workers in these workers; completed flats per 1000 inhabitants 1986 and percentage of owner-occupied flats; housing stock as of 31 December 2007.12,1986 per 1000 inhabitants; number of motor vehicles per 1000 inhabitants on 1 January 1988; proportion of cars and low-emission cars in percent; based on the cut-off date 30 June 1986 and 30 June 1987: number of employees subject to social security contributions in 1000 and proportion of employees in agriculture and forestry, in manufacturing industry and in the service sector in percent; additions and deductions in %, decrease in employment 1987 compared to 1986; unemployment rate at the end of June 1987, end of January 1989, end of March 1989, end of June 1989, end of June 1989 and end of December 1989; relative to 1970: Protestants, Catholics, agriculture, manufacturing, trade and transport, services, self-employed, employees and civil servants, workers, lower secondary school leaving certificate; secondary school leaving certificate and higher.

Party data 2: Numerical code to identify the party according to the International Almanac of Electoral History (Mackie-Rose Code) and Comparative Manifestos Project (CMP) party codes; respective left-right position of the parties after document analyses (Bundestag election programs 1987), after an expert survey and after a survey among party supporters.
