Soil characteristics and carbohydrate concentrations after 37 days of alfalfa (Alf) or ryegrass (Rye) growth, at four depths (2, 8, 14, and 20 cm from the surface of the rhizotron).

Values are means and standard deviations of three and four replicates for humidity and other parameters, respectively. The effect of plant species was evaluated using Student t-tests (p<0.05). The effect of depth was tested separately for each plant species after 37 days using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Newman-Keuls multiple comparison test and letters (a, b, and c) indicate significant differences (p<0.05).
