Share of adults planning to carry credit card balance in the U.S. 2020-2023

Between 2020 and 2023, the share of adults planning to carry a credit card balance in the next six months in the United States increased significantly. While 19 percent of respondents were going to carry a credit card balance in 2020, that percentage increased to approximately 35 percent in 2023. That means that over a third of credit card holders are expected not to be able to pay some credit card bills on time.
