Illumina Miseq genome sequencing of three Lactobacillus plantarum strains isolated from dairy products by CREA-FLC(Italy)

Three Lactobacillus plantarum probiotic strains (Lp790, Lp813, and Lp998) of dairy origin showed the best probiotic potential (Zago et al., 2011) and were then studied in more detail in this study. The genome sequence of this three strains was determined using a Miseq Illumina system. Genome analysis of Lp790, Lp813, and Lp998 and comparative genomics provided insight into genes and gene cassettes involved in probiotic functions, including life-style adaptation, genome synteny. Genomic chracteristics were compared to in-vivo results, in which the immunomodulation properties using models to predict for in vivo efficacy, the capacity to produce B-group vitamins and to induce cytokine production by dendritic cells were tested to characterize probiotic potential of these strains.
