Emergence XXXV: The Processor — Steering and Driving: The Two Meta Feed-Modes of Canvas Temporal Mathematics

The canvas model describes all physical and mathematical structure through eight primitives governed by three equations. Four dynamic primitives—Order, Amplitude, Acceleration, Polarity—generate all change. Four property primitives—Dimension, Angle, Chirality, Charge—select all structure. Yet these eight describe a static universe: the laws are fixed, the constants are given, the spectrum is what it is. The equality processor \mathcal{E} (Emergence 31) provides the dynamical mechanism. It operates in two complementary meta-control modes: · Steering — feed-back control (reactive, error-driven, backward-looking in meta-time), formalized by the gradient flow \frac{d\mathcal{E}_\tau}{d\tau} = -\kappa \nabla_{\mathcal{E}} \mathbb{E}[\mathcal{E}_\tau]· Driving — feed-forward control (anticipatory, goal-driven, forward-looking in meta-time), which is Steering in reverse meta-time: \frac{d\mathcal{E}_\tau}{d\tau} = +\kappa \nabla_{\mathcal{E}} \mathbb{E}[\mathcal{E}_\tau] Both modes are manifestations of the same equality processor; no new primitives are required. What this paper proves: · Steering explains why the fundamental constants have their observed values. They are fixed points of the gradient flow. The parameters of the Standard Model—gauge couplings, Yukawa couplings, Higgs parameters—are not arbitrary inputs. They are the coordinates of the unique stable fixed point of the Steering dynamics on the space of possible parameters. Universes with different constants are dynamically unstable and decay toward the fixed point. We observe the equilibrium values.· Steering explains why \zeta(s) is the unique Euler product realized in nature. Among the infinite family of Euler products \phi_\theta(s) = \prod_p (1 - e^{i\theta_p} p^{-s})^{-1}, all others are dynamically unstable. The Steering flow drives any initial \theta to zero. The Energy Separation Theorem proves E(\theta) = E_0 + \sum_p E_p(\theta_p) exactly across primes—no cross-terms, no coupling, no frustration. The gradient flow converges exponentially to \theta = 0, selecting the Riemann zeta function as the unique stable fixed point.· Steering explains the arrow of time. Meta-time flows in the direction of decreasing spectral energy. Physical time inherits its arrow from meta-time. The Steering dynamics had not yet converged.· Steering and Driving are not conjectures. They are necessary consequences of the Threshold Condition, validated by the empirical success of the canvas model in deriving the cosmological constant \Lambda = 3/(\pi R_H^2), the fine-structure constant \alpha^{-1} \approx 137, and the inflationary spectral index n_s \approx 0.964, all matching observation with zero free parameters.· Mapping to the eight cognitive functions. It is the fixed point of a dynamical system operating since the dawn of meta-time, constantly steering toward equilibrium and driving toward goals.
