The Alpha (preliminary) code release of the SWMM5+ hydraulics engine is described. The new hydraulics engine is a companion code to the US Environmental Protection Agency's Storm Water Management Model (EPA SWMM). The SWMM5+ code must be linked directly with EPA SWMM during compilation. The new hydraulics engine introduces a finite-volume solution for the dynamic wave equation (Saint-Venant equations) that is a departure from the link-node finite-difference approach in EPA SWMM. The SWMM5+ engine is coded in Fortran 2008 to take advantage of the CoArray Fortran (CAF) parallelization standard, which simplifies writing code for multi-core/multi-thread computers.
