Bacillus safensis KH-2006, a strain isolated from bees' gut, has been identified as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial-producing strain. Specifically, the strain's cell free supernatant prevented the growth of several pathogenic and food spoilage bacteria, such as Listeria monocytogenes, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Clostridium spp. and fungi, including Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium sp. Byssochlamys sp. and Paecilomyces variotii. Whole genome sequencing analysis indicated that the high antimicrobial activity is due to the potential production of bacteriocins, such as safencin E, plantazolicin, pumilarin and Lichenycin. This highlights that this strain might be a good candidate for biological control of food systems.
