CTD casts and ADCP measurements from New Harbour, McMurdo Sound

Little is known of the heat and mass exchange that controls the extent and thickness of the frazil ice (or platelet) ice layer beneath land fast sea ice, not are the processes which form frazil ice within the water column well understood. It is known that the formation of frazil ice is intimately linked to melting at the base of ice shelves and it is known to be present in McMurdo Sound. CTD casts and ADCP measurements were made in the New Harbour area of McMurdo Sound to determine the type of circulation that occurs in ice covered fjords. 7 profiles including a 3 profile transect across New Harbour was recorded.
