Habilitation Register of German Universities 2000-2020

The Habilitation Register of German Universities 2000-2020 covers a total of 24,714 habilitations at German universities for the period 2000-2020 and is intended to broaden and deepen empirical research on doctoral graduates and their subsequent career paths. Unlike dissertations, habilitations are not subject to mandatory publication in Germany. Aggregated data, separated for example by subject or federal state, are available on the GENESIS portal of the Federal Statistical Office of Germany. However, there is no complete database at the individual level with detailed information on the names of habilitated persons as well as on the year, university and subject of habilitation. Building on the Habilitation Register 1981-2014 by Bode and Bünstorf (2021), the present Habilitation Register 2000-2020 serves to systematically close this data gap by compiling and linking information from various data sources. Further additions as well as continuations for additional years are possible at any time.
