Ibarra RojasThe abstract is the following: The planning process for a bus network involves systematic steps to design and optimize bus services that effectively meet the mobility needs of a community. In many developing countries, the bus operations stages, including the timetable, must be computed weekly or even daily because of the variability of the available drivers. In this work, we consider three sub-problems of the bus planning process, the Window Timetable (WT) problem and the Flexible Vehicle and Crew Scheduling (FVCS) problem, in an integrated way. In the WT problem, the frequency of the lines is given, and one seeks to determine the departure time of each trip within a given time window. The FVCS problem consists of assigning a set of trips of circular transit lines to vehicles and drivers, considering labor regulations (limited duty length, mandatory rests, restricted consecutive driving time, and limited extra working hours). We propose a novel mixed integer programming and two constraint programming approaches to solve the integrated problem for instances representing a bus network and instances representing a Bus Rapid Transit system. Our approaches exhibit the benefits of considering the timetable together with the vehicle and crew scheduling problems as a whole.
