In 2022, the value of construction sand and gravel used or sold for use in concrete aggregates in the United States was valued at over 1.4 billion U.S. dollars. Whereas, railroad ballast was the lowest valued end-use of construction sand and gravel in the U.S. that year, with a value of nearly three million U.S. dollars.
