This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the lexeme <b>"khuy"</b> [xuj] in the Russian language, examining its etymological roots, semantic transformations, and sociocultural connotations. The author of the article explores the word's origin from Proto-Slavic, its connection to the Old Russian verb <b>"khovaty"</b> [xɐˈvatʲ] (to hide), and the evolution of its meanings from designating the male reproductive organ to its use as a clitic and an ironic term for a respected person. Special attention is given to historical taboos on the use of obscene language and to linguistic research that refutes theories of borrowing.
