Han Nobles (Lie Hou) Dataset

The Han Nobles (Lie Hou) Dataset is manually collected by Dr. Yunxin Li. Its main source is the following tables in Han shu 漢書: “Table of Kings’ Sons Ennobled as Nobles” (Wangzi hou biao 王子侯表), “Table of Meritorious Minister-Nobles during the Reigns of Emperor Gaozu, Emperor Hui, Empress of Gaozu, and Emperor Wen” (Gao Hui Gao Hou Wen gongchen biao 高惠高后文功臣表), “Table of Meritorious Minister-Nobles during the Reigns of Emperor Jing, Emperor Wu, Emperor Zhao, Emperor Xuan, Emperor Yuan, and Emperor Cheng” (Jing Wu Zhao Xuan Yuan Cheng gongchen biao 景武昭宣元成功臣表), and “Table of Nobles Ennobled for Imperial Affinity and Imperial Favor” (Waiqi enze hou biao 外戚恩澤侯表). For convenience, I call the three groups “Liu nobles,” “Meritorious nobles,” and “Affine nobles.” I relied on the digital version of Han shu from the ctext website (developed by Dr. Donald Sturgeon): https://ctext.org/han-shu/zh. In addition, the numbers of Eastern Han nobles come from the Qing scholar Qian Daxin’s “Supplementary Tables for the Hou Han shu (Hou Han shu bu biao 後漢書補表)”, which were based on both the Hou Han shu chapters and other sources about the Eastern Han. This dataset includes two .csv files and three .xlsx files. The three .xlsx files are “Raw Data” tables that each contain multiple tabs. The two .csv files are “Numbers of Han Marquises by Rulers' Reign Periods” and “Numbers of Han Marquises' Households by Category.” The “Numbers of Han Marquises' Households by Category” only includes the household numbers that are recorded in the Han shu tables. The categories of Nobles in this table come from the three \"Raw Data\" files in the same dataset. Each “Raw Data” file contains household numbers of nobles in one of the three categories: A: Liu Marquises; B: Meritorious Marquises; C: Affinal and Favored Marquises (including C1: affines, and C2: favorites).
