Altered nitrogen availability is known to drive shifts in microbial community composition (MCC) and activity. Yet at a long-term manipulation experiment where N availability is influenced by fertilization (adds N) and fire (volatilizes N), it was unknown how MCC would respond to fertilizer cessation. The annual application of N fertilizer for 30 years significantly shifted MCC in burned and unburned soils, but one year of fertilizer cessation did not alter MCC significantly.
