VPRS 1808 General Correspondence Subject Files [Chief Architect's Branch]

The Chief Architects Branch was a part of the Technical Division of the Housing Commission principally concerned with the servicing of land and the letting of contracts. By 1956 it was responsible for the planning and supervision of the Housing Commissions Construction Program. The Chief Architect assumed responsibility for formulating schemes to meet requirements for the construction of adequate housing for persons of limited means. The Chief Architect was responsible for submitting proposals to the Secretary of the Housing Commission as well as the Minister with respect to legislation and conferring with Government departments, municipal councils and public statutory corporations.The majority of the Chief Architects files cover a range of subjects ranging from staff directions to the planning of Housing Commission estates to the structural details of columns in homes. The Chief Architect also kept files on each Housing Commission estate.Many of the files contain plans, drawings, and minutes of meetings.
