Metagenome of benthic algal and microeukaryotes communities from Lake Baikal

We report new data describing the biodiversity of phytobenthic communities based on metabarcoding using the 18S rDNA marker and Illumina MiSeq system. The study was initiated due to dramatic changes occurring in the ecosystem of Lake Baikal in response to climate changes and anthropogenic impact on the coastal zone. We have determined the taxonomic diversity of algae and the composition of associated organisms. Metabarcoding data analysis allowed us to detect difficultly identified taxa (Stramenopiles, Alveolata, Euglenozoa, Chromista, Rhizaria, Amoebozoa, etc.), which can make a significant contribution to the functioning and shaping of the structure of algal communities.
