Most colorless sulfur bacteria (CSB) existed in uncultivated forms, and those obtained in pure cultures are difficult to maintain in the culture collection. There is impossible to obtain information about their metabolism without genome analysis. One of the most interesting groups of CSB are representatives of filamentous bacteria of the genus Thiothrix. Thiothrix subterranea sp. nov. Ku-5 was isolated from the underground horizons of a flooded mine in Russia. It is capable of lithoautotrophic and lithoheterotrophic growth in the presence of reduced sulfur compounds, during the oxidation of which elemental sulfur inclusions are deposited inside the cells. Its complete sequence and full methylome were determined using Pacific Biosciences SMRT sequencing.
