LeCroy Bifurcated Stemmed

This small stone projectile point with the distinctive lobed base is known as a LeCroy Bifurcated Stemmed. LeCroy points were used as spear or dart points and date to the latter part of the Early Archaic period (c. 7000-6000 BC). LeCroy points are more well known from the western part of the state and into Tennessee, but can be found throughout the piedmont as well. LeCroy points share a similar base shape to St Albans side-notched points and may be the precursors to the later Stanly and Kanawha points. This example has been repeatedly resharpened before it was lost or more likely discarded. It was found at a multi-component site (31WA2199) in eastern Wake County, NC and is made from a metavolcanic stone commonly called rhyolite. It measures 2.6 cm long, 1.8 cm wide, and 0.5 cm thick.
