The N-heterocyclic carbene IPr serves as a supporting ligand in a series of low-coordinate nickel nitrosyl complexes which display a range of nitrosyl bonding modes. Attempts to form a cationic two-coordinate nickel nitrosyl led to the three-coordinate {[IPr][IPr′]Ni(NO)}+[BArF4]−, in which one of the IPr ligands exhibits unusual C(5) coordination.
