Images and GIS from an Archaeological Evaluation at Crimscote Solar and Storage, Whitchurch, Warwickshire 2022

This collection comprises images and GIS data from an archaeological evaluation carried out by Cotswold Archaeology on land at the proposed site of Crimscote Solar and Storage Project, Whitchurch, Warwickshire. The evaluation took place between August and October 2022. A total of 190 trenches were excavated. Archaeological features were identified throughout the site, with the majority closely correlating to the results of preceding geophysical survey. A small assemblage of worked flint was recovered from across the site, indicating broadly prehistoric activity within the area. An area of probable Late Iron Age to Early Roman settlement was recorded in the eastern and central parts of the site, with ditches, pits and postholes recorded. Excavation of these features produced a modest artefactual assemblage and provided some evidence of possible industrial, high temperature activities. Further undated features, including probable field boundary ditches and a ditch/pit alignment, were recorded elsewhere within the site and may be broadly contemporary. Evidence of medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation was identified across the site, correlating with geophysical trends, and former post-medieval/modern agricultural features were also recorded. Numerous features were identified throughout the site which could not be dated artefactually; whilst some were recorded in the vicinity of dated features, and are potentially contemporary, the interpretation of the remaining feature is currently impossible.
