Digital Archive from Archaeological Evaluation at Highlands Nursery, Kelvedon Road, Tiptree, Essex, September-October 2024

This collection comprises images, survey drawings and site records from an archaeological evaluation at Highlands Nursery, Kelvedon Road, Tiptree, Essex. Work was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust during September to October 2024. The archaeological evaluation (82 trial-trenches) was carried out in advance of the development of the site. Forty-seven archaeological features were uncovered by the evaluation, including 16 ditches, 13 pits, seven gullies, six tree-throws, one erosion hollow and three natural features. Medieval activity likely related to agriculture is focused to the south of the evaluation, with three later post-medieval/modern field boundaries across the site. A large pit contained 14th-/15th-century brick and peg-tile wasters which could be evidence for a nearby kiln. Both prehistoric pottery and Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic worked flints were intrusive within features on the site, suggesting a nearby presence of prehistoric activity.
