The files for 1921-35 are almost exclusively those of the Sydney Harbour Trust which was combined with the Navigation Department to form the Maritime Services Board in 1936.The Maritime Services Board had responsibility for the issue, suspension and cancellation of the certificates of competency and service, the framing of harbour regulations, the preservation of ports, harbours and navigable rivers and creeks within the state; the licensing, appointment and removal of pilots, the regulation of lighthouses; and the superintendence of lights and other sea, harbour and river marks. In particular, the Maritime Services Board was responsible for the maritime use of Sydney harbour and has owned and administered large numbers of harbourside properties.These correspondence files have been extensively culled by the Maritime Services Board but reflect its wide ranging activities.(13/13930-14264, 13/14315-16). 337 boxes.Note: This description is extracted from Concise Guide to the State Archives of New South Wales, 3rd Edition 2000.
