VPRS 16671 Index to Inward Correspondence

The indexes relate to the inwards correspondence received by the Richmond Council during the period 1856 to 1876 and would have been used to retrieve letters which were filed by their registration number (annual single number system). Each index lists the subject of the correspondence in alphabetical order and the corresponding registration number. It should be noted that the indexes for correspondence between 1862-1865,1891, January - June 1875 and 1876 are missing. It is possible that some inward letters were not allocated registration numbers until some time after they were received, as the numbers do not consistently follow a chronological sequence.For the index from 1856 to 1861, the correspondence is listed alphabetically under name and/or subject Note that this index provides dates only and not the registration numbers of the correspondence. Check the consignment list of the correspondence series for the unit containing the relevant date range.For the remaining indexes the correspondence is listed alphabetically under name and/or subject in each relevant year and provides the registration numbers of letters of interest.
