An introduction to the Ṣaḥîḥ, with a commentary on the beginning of that work, compiled by ‘OMAR B. MUḤAMMAD ‘ÂRIF Nahrwâlî الفتنی,1 for the benefit of his ignorant countrymen.
The preface begins:
The work begins with a general introduction, (fol. I. (fol. (fol. (fol. (fol. Then follow various discussions, (fol. 52) مسائل شتّی لها تعلق بما نحن فیه, concluded by notes on Bukhârî and his work, (fol.
Added, (fol. 109) a survey of all the books and chapters of the Ṣaḥîḥ with regard to their number; (fol. 112) another pointing out the principles of their arrangement, taken from Balḳainî’s commentary; 2 (fol. 121) another telling the traditions, and especially the تعالیق and the متابعات 1 contained in each chapter; and (fol. 127) an alphabetical list of the Companions of the Prophet on whose authority traditions are related in the Ṣaḥîḥ.
The commentary (foll. 132-313) is very copious. It does not, however, go as far as is stated in the inscription, but terminates abruptly in the very beginning of the کتاب الایمان. A sham conclusion has been added by a different hand.
Well written; of the twelfth century. Ornamented in colours. The copy was made by a calligraph for the use of the author, who revised it afterwards, and wrote the above title. Two leaves (foll. 134 and 135) were also inserted by him as a supplement (تتمّة).
A list of contents on foll. 1-3.
[Sir Charles Wilkins.]
1 Thus the author names himself in his preface. His native place in Nahrwâllah, or Pattan, in Gujarât.
