A ubiquitous taurine-respiring murine gut bacterium that contributes to colonization resistance against enteropathogens

Taurine-respiring bacteria in the mammalian gut produce hydrogen sulfide that has an ambivalent impact on host health. Immoderate expansion of the human gut sulfidogen Bilophila wadsworthia is linked to intestinal inflammation and cancer, yet commensal sulfidogens can also protect against enteropathogens. We report the isolation, genomic and physiological characterization, and in vivo lifestyle of the first taurine-respiring, sulfidogenic strain from the mouse gut. Sequencing was performed at the Joint Microbiome Facility of the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna under the project IDs JMF-2012-1, JMF-2104-01, and JMF-2101-05.
