收藏资源简介:
A documentary apparatus for the war for Cyprus and the Holy League, 1570–1573, built from public-domain sources carried in full or in whole sections, with the original beside the English: the capitulations of the Holy League (Rome, May 1571) in the Spanish copy printed by Dumont, transcribed from the page images, with a working translation; the Popes' documents after the victory, Pius V on the war and on Christian captives (1572) and Gregory XIII's feast of the Rosary (1573); Giovanni Pietro Contarini's Venetian history of the councils and the battle (1572), with its map of the bay; Fernando de Herrera's Spanish account and song of victory (Seville 1572); Nestore Martinengo's report of the siege of Famagusta in William Malim's English of 1572, with Malim's dedication, his description of Cyprus and his Latin prayer; the captive's tale of Don Quixote I.39 and the prologue to Part II in Spanish and English; and Chesterton's Lepanto as reception. With a timeline linked into the texts and plates from Stirling-Maxwell's Don John of Austria (1883). The Ottoman side, which has no public-domain English source, enters with İbrahim Peçevî's chapters on the conquest of Cyprus and on the battle and the new fleet (Tarih-i Peçevî, Istanbul 1866, pp. 486–491 and 495–499), transcribed by eye from the printed Ottoman text, with transliteration and a working translation; and the separate peace of Venice with Selim II (7 March 1573) in its Venetian and Ottoman versions; Kâtip Çelebi's naval history Tuhfetü'l-kibâr (Istanbul 1729, ff. 42r–45v) on Lepanto, the new fleet, the campaigns of 1572–73 and the fall of Tunis in 1574, carried in the same way; further Ottoman sources are planned.
