资源简介:
Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted a cultural resources survey of the 31.5-acre William Trask Tract in Beaufort County, South Carolina, in January, February, and March 2006. The work was conducted on behalf of the owner, Harold Trask. We identified one archaeological site and one isolated find during the field investigations. The isolate consists of one chert flake. Further management of this resource is not warranted. Site 38BU2177 is a Woodland/Mississippian artifact scatter, possible Mississippian burial, and the early to mid-twentieth century Baynard Cemetery. We recommend site 38BU2177 potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. We recommend that the portion of the site that contains the African-American cemetery and possible Mississippian burial be preserved in place. We have identified descendants of the individuals buried in the cemetery; these descendants are forming a Baynard Cemetery Committee with the purpose of ensuring the long-term care and preservation of the cemetery. The owner of the tract is working closely with the committee. We also recommend that the owner work with the Historic Preservation Office of the Catawba Nation in York County to ensure the proper treatment of the possible Mississippian burial at the site. The remaining portions of the site do not contain significant archaeological deposits, and preservation of these areas is not warranted.
