VPRS 16628 Circular and Note Book

This series comprises a single volume that documents a number of aspects related to prison management. Subjects covered by the volume include, but are not limited to, prisoner restraint, instructions regarding prisoners under sentence of death, the issue of release warrants and warders meal hours. Entries are mostly in the form of pasted printed circulars issued by the Inspector General of Penal Establishments, notes or transcriptions from legal opinions.Sufficient evidence exists within the volume to indicate that it was created within the Melbourne Gaol. It is unclear who maintained the volume, although a number of the circulars bear the annotation "from Front Office". This suggests the volume was not maintained by the Gaol's Governor or his Office.Only a very few prisoners are identified in this book.This volume was transferred to PROV during 2010 after it had remained in private hands for a period of at least 35 years.
