A statistical design of experiments approach was used to optimise mechanical lysis conditions for DNA extraction from soil, with a focus on increasing the length of purified DNA fragments without impacting the observed microbial diversity of the sample. Obtaining longer DNA sequence reads for soil samples has the potential to improve meta-genome assembly for these complex samples.
