From a systematic study of the radio properties of luminous red quasars in the SDSS comma we have found clear evidence that distinguishes them from the more normal blue quasars comma suggesting that they are a special stage in the co-evolution of AGN. To complement an on-going VLT-XSHOOTER program exploring the differences in the accretion disks of red quasars at z=1.5 comma we propose new XMM-Newton observations of 5 carefully selected targets comma which comma in combination with an archival dataset of normal quasars comma will allow a controlled study of differences in openPar1closePar nuclear obscuring columns comma openPar2closePar intrinsic X-ray to optical spectral slope comma and openPar3closePar coronal properties. Our study is designed to uncover whether red quasars have systematically different accretion disks from normal quasars.
