These data were collected to determine if a modified rabies virus carrying channelrhodopsin 2 can be used to identify the functional properties of cells in the medial entorhinal cortex that provide monosynaptic input to cells in the hippocampus. Tetrode recordings from two mice freely foraging in an open field arena were made, with subsequent laser stimulation trials to identify which of the recorded cells project directly to the hippocampus. The dataset includes spike times, position data and laser onset times from nine open field sessions, nine laser stimulation sessions and a total of seven cells (one of which was recorded across six consecutive open field sessions). The data can be reused to investigate the firing properties of cells expressing a modified rabies virus.
