The Torbiscal breed was obtained by crossing four Iberian breeds: Ervideira, CarderÃa, Campanario and Puebla. A conservation herd was established in the Deheson del Encinar (Oropesa, Spain) that managed to survive the African plague of the XXth c. sixties. This herd has been the subject of numerous studies and research in genetics by INIA researchers. There is a complete pedigree and data on the births of the mothers. 324 animals of which DNA or blood have been conserved (especially from recent years) have been sequenced.
