Drone photogrammetry survey at Macquarie Island 2024

As part of the 2023/2024 season Voyage V4 resupply, The Mapping Program sent a round trip expeditioner to survey the Isthmus of Macquarie Island station. Part of this survey involved using a DJI Matrice 350 (M350) drone equipped with a Zenmuse P1 mapping camera. The intended purpose of sending the drone/mapping camera combination was for an updated station orthophoto / orthomosaic. Ground Control Points were utilised, as well as measuring each GCP with a Lecia GS18+ rover for better coordinate referencing of the model / imageryDue to conflicts from helicopter operations changing during the designated window for drone capture, only a portion of land south of the machinery shed was captured. Camera calibration issues discovered at the end of the season have also rendered this data not suitable for high precision mapping.
