Oceanographical Dynamics and planktonic ecosystem in the eastern area of the Bransfield Straits and adjacent areas

The objectives of this cruise were:

- Typification of the circulation and propagation of oscillations
in the eastern basin of the Bransfield Strait and adjacent areas.

- Typification of the structure and trophic interactions in the
planktonic communities of the study area. Relationships between
the biological variability and the hydrographical conditions.

- Study of the structure and diversity of the microbial and
zooplanktonic communities in the different hydrographical subsystems
which are found between the Drake Passage and the Antarctic Peninsula.

The cruise included a transect of seven biological stations through
the Drake Passage and a grid of stations in the eastern basin of the
Bransfield Strait. This grid included rapid hydrographic stations, in
which temperature and salinity profiles were obtained with a CTD sonde
and water samples were taken with a Rosette sampler, and biological
stations, in which additional samples and zooplankton net hauls were
also taken. The work carried out on board included: Determination of
nutrients, chlorophyll, oxygen, protein and diverse enzymatic activities;
filtration for analysis of C, H, N and nucleic acids in the seston;
experiments to estimate bacterial production, primary production,
mesozooplankton respiration and growth rate, and ingestion rates by
microheterotrophs and mesozooplankton.

Los objetivos de esta campana fueron:

- Caracterizacion de la circulacion y propagacion de
oscilaciones en la cuenca oriental del Estrecho de Bransfield y
areas adyacentes.

- Caracterizacion de la estructura y principales interacciones
troficas en las comunidades planctonicas del area de
estudio. Relaciones entre la variabilidad biologica y las
condiciones hidrogroficas.

- Estudio de la estructura y diversidad de las comunidades
microbianas y zooplanctonicas en los diferentes subsistemas
hidrograficos que se encuentran entre el Estrecho de Drake y la
Peninsula Antartica.

La campana incluyo un transecto de siete estaciones
biologicas a traves del Estrecho de Drake y una red de
estaciones en la cuenca oriental del Estrecho de Bransfield. En esta
red se intercalaron estaciones hidrograficas rapidas, en las
que se hacian perfiles con la sonda CTD y se tomaban muestras de
agua con las botellas de la Rosette, y estaciones biologicas, en
las que ademas se hacian muestreos adicionales y pescas de
zooplancton con diversos tipos de redes. Los trabajos realizados a
bordo incluyeron: Determinaciones de nutrientes, clorofila,
oxigeno, prote?nas y diversas actividades enzimaticas;
filtraciones para analisis de C, H, N y acidos nucleicos en el
seston; experimentos para estimacion de produccion bacteriana,
produccion primaria, respiracion y tasa de crecimiento del
mesozooplancton y tasas de ingestion por microheterotrofos y
mesozooplancton.
