These files contain correspondence, maps, tracings and proclamation records pertaining to the transfer of control of roads and parts thereof from Crown Lands to local government bodies (councils).Most records relate to transfers resulting from amendments to the Local Government Act 1906 in 1908. These amendments enabled councils to take control of certain roads. The process formally ended in 1919 when Sections 220-227b of the Local Government Act 1919 gave local councils full authority for the maintenance and management of public roads. However some files contain records dated after 1919.The files are arranged alphabetically according to historical Local Council Area (LGA).Digital access copies of files were provided by the transferring agency (Crown Lands, Department of Planning, Industry and Environment).
