Replication Data for: Vicious circle of peripheries: Representation of sub-municipal units in local election manifestos in amalgamated municipalities

The data are based on manual coding of 386 electoral manifestos written by parties in 82 municipalities for the local elections held at the end of September 2022 in the Czech
Republic. All documents have been merged into one dataset. The text was then divided into sentences annotated by municipality name and party. Human coders have searched for mentions of any kinds of location, except for very vague formulations (e.g., in housing estates, along a river, outside the centre etc). About 5,700 sentences contained some reference to a location, in some cases even to multiple locations. In total, 6,252 locations have been found which were geolocated using online maps, particularly “mapy.cz”, and “maps.google.com”. In a few cases, it was necessary to identify the location by searching local press and municipal outlets.
Based on the maps, the area of the municipality (which we call a “settlement unit”) mentioned in the manifesto have been ascertained. We then summarized the results by in terms of party and settlement unit (n=3,786). This combination was the unit of analysis. For each settlement unit there are as many rows as the number of analysed manifestos, and each row displayed a value of 1 if the party mentioned the given settlement unit and 0 if it did not. This indication later served as a dependent variable in the analysis. In most cases (70%), the value was zero, which means that there was no mention of any place within the unit or about the unit as such in the given party manifesto. The dataset is accompanied with R code and STATA dofile containing all steps of analysis.
