资源简介:
Mosasauroids represent a unique lineage of marine reptiles that dominated diverse niches in Late Cretaceous seas. Some paleohistological studies have explored tooth growth and enamel microstructure, revealing incremental growth lines. The present study analyzed three mosasauroid teeth (DGEO-CTG UFPE 6153, DGEO-CTG UFPE 6182 and DGEO-CTGE UFPE 6200) collected in the Paraíba Basin. Various measurements were taken in order to calculate the average spacing of consecutive growth lines, formed daily (Von Ebner lines), and the average thickness of the enamel. The average spacing between consecutive Von Ebner lines varied between 12,48 μm and 15,74 μm. Average thickness of the enamel varied between 50,92 μm and 155, μm.Three mosasauroid teeth (DGEO-CTG UFPE 6153, DGEO-CTG UFPE 6182 and DGEO-CTGE UFPE 6200) were selected from the scientific collection of the Geology Department in UFPE (Universidade Federal de Pernambuco). These specimens were previously collected in Late Cretaceous rocks of the Paraíba Basin. Specimens DGEO-CTG UFPE 6153 and DGEO-CTG UFPE 6182 are from the Gramame Formation (Maastrichtian Gramame), while DGEO-CTG UFPE 6200 is from Itamaracá Formation (Campanian). Each specimen was embedded in transparent polyester resin and let to dry in a vacuum chamber and a mid-cross section was made on each individual tooth. After being sectioned with the aid of a diamond saw, the specimens were polished, then glued to glass slides with resin. Finally, the teeth were cut into thin slices and polished until reached ideal thickness for visualization in microscope. A Zeiss Imager A2 petrographic microscope was used in order to visualize the microstrucures within the slides. Spacing between consecutive Von Ebner lines and enamel thickness were measured with the aid of an AxioVision 4.8 software.
