Sheffield Local Heritage List
Why we created a local list In October 2019 the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government announced that funding would be available for a campaign to encourage communities to nominate historic buildings and other heritage assets which they value. These assets would be included on their Council’s local list, helping to protect them through the planning system. The listing of historic sites and buildings has been around for many years and nearly 50% of Local Planning Authorities already have one. Now Local Lists are being promoted in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), all local authorities are being encouraged to compile or update their own local lists. In South Yorkshire, we have partial local lists for Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield. As part of the Local Heritage Listing Project, these will be updated, added to and made publicly available on a dedicated interactive platform, The South Yorkshire Local Heritage List. South Yorkshire Local Heritage List | Sheffield City Council How the list works As part of the creation of the list, we are looking for local people, community groups, heritage organisations and anyone with an interest in the history of South Yorkshire to nominate assets to go on the list. They could be historic buildings, monuments, archaeological sites, parks and gardens, historic landscapes or any other heritage assets that are significant to a particular area. These will then be assessed against a number of approved criteria and added to the Local List if appropriate. Assets which don’t make it onto the list will still be used to enrich the Historic Environment Record (HER) for South Yorkshire. You can view listed assets, nominate candidates, see the assessment criteria or read the blog on the South Yorkshire Local Heritage List website. This dataset is updated regularly, the “Item updated” date above refers to the metadata only.
