Coups: Different Mechanisms and their Consequences for Institution Change Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith: Journal of Conflict Resolution Replication materials and supplementary material: We obtain Nation-Year data from Anticipating Instability replication data (https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataverse/anticipatinginstability/). These data have information about leader change, leader tenure, institutions, economic and demographic information, and policy. These data are contained in the file called NationYearData4Coups.dta. We obtain data on coups from a variety of sources: Colpus data downloaded from https://www.johnjchin.com/colpus 4/19/2024 Cline coup data downloaded https://databank.illinois.edu/datasets/IDB-8026876# on 4/19/2024 see https://clinecenter.illinois.edu/project/research-themes/democracy-and-development/coup-detat-project / Powell and Thyne coup data downloaded March 2025: https://www.uky.edu/~clthyn2/coup_data/home.htm The coup data are in COUP.dta. These coup data are primarily organized at the nation-year level. However we also included an observation of each coup reported in Colpus data. For instance, if there were three coups in a nation year then there are three observations for that nation year. Extra observations are identified by the multicoup variable. Nation-years with a single coup or no coup have a single observation. If you want to consider a single observation per year, then the statement “if multicoup==0” will include a single observation for each nation year. The analyses are similar if a single observation or multiple coup events are considered. The main analysis is in TypesOfCoupJCR.do. This file call labels.do (which is simply a list of labels for variables, useful for creating tables). Line 14 of TypesOfCoupJCR.do specifices the location of files and line 16 specifies a subdirectory to store results in (we used tablefigures, but you can create your preferred directory.
