The subclass Peritrichia comprise a large and distinctive group of ciliated protists first observed by van Leeuwenhoek over 340 years ago. The evolutionary relationships among this major group are a hot topic because morphological and molecular analyses have led to contradictory conclusions. Therefore, to explore the origin and evolution of this protist family, we analyzed the transcriptomes of 12 typical representatives.
