Cucurbita pepo belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is a highly variable species. The %u201Csummer squash%u201D types (including zucchini) rank among the highest-valued vegetables worldwide. A broad range of genomic tools are today available for other important cucurbits. However, these tools are still lacking in the Cucurbita genus. We report the generation of about 500,000 high-quality Cucurbita pepo EST sequences, using Roche-454 GS FLX Titanium massive parallel pyrosequencing technology.
