NRS-15269 | Commissioners' reports on proposed railway and tramway lines

This series contains copies of reports and recommendations made by the Railway Commissioners on the construction of proposed railways and tramways. The reports detail estimated costs for construction, operation and maintenance of lines, and projected revenue. Reports usually discussed the various factors that would impact on the viability of the line, including projected estimates of population growth and possible tourist attractions in the area. The reports were either submitted to the Minister or Under Secretary for Public Works.Entries in item one are handwritten, while those in later volumes consist of pasted in typed or printed reports. Item ten contains reports from the Chief Engineer for Railway and Tramway Construction giving a description of the route and an estimate of the cost of the proposed railway line. These reports were prepared for the Minister for Works and Railways as part of the Parliamentary Plan submitted for the seal and signature of the constructing authority prior to transmission to the Public Works Department. These reports are loose-leaf and do not form part of the volume and the dates range from 18 December 1928 to 14 March 1939.Items 1-7 are indexed.Custody HistoryFrom 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R54. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R54 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.
