TheNationalNanotechnologyInitiative(NNI)isamultiagency,multidisciplinaryfederalinitiativecomprisingacollectionofresearchprogramsandotheractivitiesfundedbytheparticipatingagenciesandlinkedbythevisionof“afutureinwhichtheabilitytounderstandandcontrolmatteratthenanoscaleleadstoarevolutionintechnologyandindustrythatbenefitssociety.”Asfirst statedinthe2004NNIstrategicplan,theparticipatingagenciesintendtomakeprogressinrealizingthatvisionbyworkingtowardfourgoals(BoxS.1).Planning,coordination,andmanagementoftheNNIarecarriedoutbytheinteragencyNanoscaleScience,Engineering,andTechnology(NSET)SubcommitteeoftheNationalScienceandTechnologyCouncil(NSTC)CommitteeonTechnology(CoT)withsupportfromtheNationalNanotechnologyCoordinationOffice(NNCO).TheNSETSubcommitteehasestablishedfourtopicalworkinggroups,which,alongwiththerelationshipsoftheaboveinteragencybodies,areindicatedinFigureS.1.
