ANSYS 13.0-Fluent software was used to solve the mathematical model to investigate if including spirals in horizontal sand filters would increase the effectiveness of the filter. Horizontal filter with three different spiral pitches were compared with a horizontal filter with no spiral for depth of penetration of the filtered fluid within the sand. The spiral did enhance the penetration and as the spiral pitch decreased the penetration increased. This however did mean higher pumping costs but the cost is still lower than in a case of a vertical sand filter.
