In 2022, countries classified as politically unstable accounted for the largest share of global coking coal production. That year, approximately 746.9 million metric tons of coking coal were produced by politically unstable countries. In comparison, approximately over one million metric tons of coking coal was produced in politically stable countries. Coking coal is also known as metallurgical coal, which is used to produce coke, the fuel used to produce steel.
