Acidogenic fermentation of sewage sludge

This work explored the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) through the anaerobic digestion of the sewage sludge (SS). A batch assay was carried out to evaluate the combined effect of the use of thermal pre-treatment (120ºC, 15 min) and the Substrate/Inoculum ratio (S/I) (1, 2, 4 and 6 gVS of substrate/gVS of inoculum) on the acidogenic potential of the SS. Analysis of the microbial community in the reactor was studied presenting revealed that Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes are the dominant phyla involved in the fermentation of the SS.
