We aim to assess the extent of over-decompression of ice VII as a function of the decompression rate at higher temperatures (above the metastability domain of ice VI) using a dynamic diamond anvil cell combined with time resolved X-ray diffraction on ID09, in order to directly probe the shift of the ice VII–liquid transition with decompression rate. This will help elucidate the underlying mechanisms of ice VII superheating. A similar study will be performed on the melting shift of bcc bismuth, a model system for investigating dynamical (de)compression effects on the phase diagram of metals
