NRS-1063 | Aborigines Protection: Report of the Public Service Board

This report on Aborigines' Protection by the Public Service Board is the original typescript of the report tabled in the Legislative Assembly by the Chief Secretary on 2 May 1940.(1) The report was requested by the Chief Secretary in connection with the Aborigines Protection (Amendment) Bill.The original typescript report is annotated and the printed copy in the Parliamentary Papers is not significantly different from the original typescript report (although page numbers differ because of the format in the Parliamentary Papers).In gathering information for the report, the Public Service Board visited Aboriginal Reserves and Stations; held discussions with members of the Aborigines Protection Board, Police Officers engaged in supervising aborigines, members of the Department of Anthropology at Sydney University, missionaries and Medical Officers; reviewed files related to the administration of aborigines; and considered the proceedings of conferences and inquiries held in New South Wales and elsewhere. The Public Service Board also perused the evidence given before the Parliamentary Select Committee appointed on 9 November 1937 to inquire into the administration of the Aborigines Protection Board.The Report's recommendations are located on the first two pages, followed by an index and list of appendices. Each page of the Report is stamped with the number “40875”.Inside the Report's front cover are four pages held together with a file fastener relating to the Report's movement between Government Departments and the University of Sydney.Endnote1.
