Metagenomic analysis in Bangkok, Thailand

Shotgun metagenomics was conducted to analyze bacterial communities and pathogens in water samples collected from Phadungkrungkasem Canal, Bangkok, Thailand. A total of ten samples were collected from two different times. Five samples were collected along the canal on 19th January 2015, and were named BKK_X1. Another five samples collected from the same points on 23rd November 2015, they were named BKK_X2. The denoted X was represented the sampling locations. Two liters of each sample were collected from the water surface, where were near the aquatic animal market (BKK_A1 and BKK_A2), plant market (BKK_B1 and BKK_B2), fresh market (BKK_C1 and BKK_C2), and street food stalls in night times (BKK_D1, BKK_D2, BKK_E1, and BKK_E2). Bacteria in water sample were concentrated using filtration technique. The bacterial DNA was extracted and sequenced using Illumina Miseq sequencer. The shotgun sequences were processed using bioinformatic analysis for taxonomy classification of bacteria and the potential pathogens. We anticipate that our results could be used for prevention of infectious disease from these areas.
