资源简介:
The programme of archaeological works identified well preserved structures and a largely intact floor of the foundry. Though little was surviving of the internal workings of the Victorian Iron foundry due to the constant adaptations it went under through the years, the main 1860s structure survived with the pillar bases of cast iron stanchions and the western and northern front wall intact. There was an extension to the eastern side built between 1894 and 1898, with further extensions to the rear at this time. Some internal pits, some being probable casting pits, machine bases and the foundations of the original brick chimney, with a related brick flue and engine house flooring were found in the excavations, some of which dated to the early phase of works in the foundry. A weighing machine that was put into the foundry floor post-1912 was found to survive virtually intact beneath the later concrete floor, and was still in use up to the late 1980s (David Lally, pers comm) before it was replaced by a more up to date electronic device. The focus of the Iron works changing to incorporate Ferro-alloy workings meant further adaptions in the mid-1930s and the same company continued working here, adapting and expanding again in the 1960s and 70s. The newest large chimney that had long been a contentious land mark for Glossop was built in 1977, and expanded to 400ft high in the 1980s to stop the pollution from the chimney dropping on the residents of Glossop.
